Top Five

Top Five

I’ve been both a productivity pr0n consumer and a procrastinator for quite some time now - I discovered GTD back in my days at Nextel (so at least five or six years ago), and have tried and abandoned more task management software than I care to remember (I’m using The Hit List now, if that’s important to anyone). I’m usually pretty good about recording and planning next actions for projects, but I still sometimes fall down in actually doing those actions. Lately, though, I’ve gotten a bit better, and I owe that improvement to the Top Five practice.

Basically, I have a list of things to do/actions to take that grows and shrinks every day (through recurring tasks and whatnot), but averages somewhere north of 15 or 20 items. When confronted with such a big list, though, I tend to get stuck in the weeds, and spend too much time evaluating priorities. To avoid this difficulty (and to help trick myself out of procrastinating), every morning I pull out five things from the big list and write them in a notebook. That gives me a smaller target to focus on, and (so far) has resulted in many getting more things done, consistently.

Travel/Speaking Update

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Just a quick note to update people on my soon-to-be whereabouts.

June

As far as I know, I’m done with conferences and events for this month - which is good, given that July starts a somewhat busier stretch.

July

Speaking of… I’ve got two events in July. On Monday the 13th, I’ll be giving a quick presentation at Pecha Kucha Pittsboro. It’ll be my first constraint-driven presentation, and I’m very excited about it.

Then, On July 24th and 25th, I’ll be at Rails Underground in London. I’ve never been to the city, so I’m excited to go (though I’ll only have a couple of half days to look around). I’m also eager to give my talk on Rack again, since it went over pretty well at Railsconf earlier this year.

August

In August, I’ll be in Boston. Twice. August 15th is the date we’re looking at for the next Developer Day (yes, I know the site still says DC. We’ll update it when we have more info on the Boston event). I’ll then be returning two weeks later for my brother-in-law’s wedding, which should be great fun. In between, we’ve got the Rails Rumble - I haven’t made a decision about whether to compete yet, so we’ll see how that shakes out. Should I go for the threepeat?

September

Things slow down a bit in September; I’ve got a proposal in to one event that would happen in the second week, and I’m definitely flying out to Chicago to speak at WindyCityRails (after incorporating some of the feedback on my domain modeling talk from RubyNation).

Afterwards

After September, things get a lot murkier. We’re planning on doing at least one more Developer Day this year after Boston, and I have several proposals out to other events, but nothing’s definite yet.

Anyways, that’s about it. If you’re planning on attending any of these events (all of which look great, by the way - register now!), drop me a line!

Happy Anniversary to me!

I was just on Working with Rails the other day, and I noticed that my profile says I’ve been using Ruby and Rails for 4 years now. After thinking a bit, I’ve realized that that’s correct—I watched the development of Rails through the end of 2004, but I really only started experimenting with it at the beginning of 2005 (version 0.10ish), and I launched my first application* with it in late January of 2005. It took a while longer before I was able to use Ruby and Rails full-time, but the start of it all was darn close to exactly four years ago. Wow!

Since then, I’ve spoken in the US, Italy, and Germany, written a book, and met some amazing people—but the biggest benefit has been working in a language and with a framework that I really enjoy. So, thanks to Matz and the Ruby team, DHH and the Rails team, and to everyone else who’s contributed to either over the years. Here’s to the future!

* It was a simple GTD/todo list application, if you must ask.

The book has arrived!

I spent Thursday and Friday in DC at my company’s annual anniversary event - we had loads of fun, as you might be able to tell from these pics. After getting home around 2am on Saturday morning, I crashed… and when I woke up on Saturday, I discovered that the author copies of my book, Practical REST on Rails 2 Projects, had been delivered on Friday. It looks like you can go ahead and order it from Amazon, or wait a bit longer for it to show up in your local bookstore - but finally, the wait is (really) over!

Say hello to my little friend

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Or, more precisely, my new daughter. After a rough labor and unplanned c-section, Morgan Dawn Scofield joined the world on Saturday, March 22nd at 2:59 PM. She came in at 6lbs 6oz and 19 3/4″ long, and both she and Lacie are doing great.

Blogging may be light over the next week or so as we all get used to the new order of things :)
